The fifth in our series of free music from Frijsfo Beats artists is a real treat, and comes in the form of a live recording from one of Point B’s most recent shows. It was at Bristol’s legendary underground club Cosies, where he, DJ Oslek, and Sclist came together to launch his new album ‘The Veld‘. One of the seemingly few electronic musicians who actually performs his music live in a club setting rather than just mixing tracks on a laptop, this has been an important part of Point B’s creative process for years. Testing out new ideas, beats, and melodies on the fly, he takes inspiration from club crowds and sound-systems before tweaking and twisting them into full tracks later on in the studio.

This live set shows yet another side to Point B’s music than ‘The Veld’ which is “primed for deep headphone listening and more meditative DJ sets”, however both make for very engaging and exciting listening experiences – the kind that many fans have come to expect from him having heard his distinctive musical output over nearly a decade.

Frijsfo Beats 7″ vinyl forthcoming 2012

“After cutting his teeth on the respected Werk Discs back in 2005, Sam Atkins has had sporadic and sparse output under this alias. So, it’s good to see Atki2 back with some fresh titbits for 2012. Knock Knock and Vietnam have a wonderful cockeyed dancehall characteristic to them, think the 90’s heavily electronic styles from the likes of Fashion, Steely & Clevie, Taxi labels, with it’s twisted and often weird electronics but all within a dagger inducing locked groove. The immediately noticeable fact about The Veld is that it’s a Point B record. That’s why it can sound sharply contemporary almost without the listener noticing. Think about it, and it’s clear a number of today’s more desirable influences are there, but without a hint of gimmickry. Bultitude handles the weight of classic and revitalised dubstep with intuitive balance, populating the music’s customary space with snatches of fascinating, exotic texture. Elsewhere he remoulds the low-end growl and frigid rhythm composition of darkside neo-electro, or he adapts the sound Frijsfo has effectively made its own – a radically updated and remixed form of 2step garage.

The point is that all this is sublimated into a consistent, one-of-a-kind voice across the album’s trajectory, which is primed for deep headphone listening and more meditative DJ sets. Fans of labelmate Kuoyàh’s post-dubstep concrète will no doubt be on board straight away, as will followers of Vex’d and recent solo projects from members Roly Porter and Jamie Teasedale AKA Kuedo.

Even admirers of the more free-ranging experiments on Mala’s Deep Medi label should find much to love here. Uncompromising and accessible at the same time, it may well prove to be the Point B record that wins the producer more new listeners than any to date.

Highlights include the title track, which plays off the muzzled threat of a bassline against skewed gamelan tones. “The Closure” and “Fen” both paint wide, eerie landscapes with acoustic source sounds, the former juxtaposing frigid machine funk with simple piano figures and strings snapping. “Fossils” admits a tidal influx of warmth, washing in snatches of vocal melisma, before “Jetsam Collector” sets lumbering low-end mechanics in motion, embellished with resonant fiddle or violin.

Looked at from a distance, The Veld draws on anything but a homogeneous palette. But up close it manages to be faultlessly coherent, demanding to be judged as a precisely conceived and sequenced whole.

However, the glistening, distorted environment that this UK bass-inclined EP generally evokes is quite specific; the four tracks here all doing something a little bit different while remaining part of the same general unsettling template. The slowed-down swing of “The Established Order” alternates between sharp-as-a-needle breaks and spacial incandescence. “Breeding Ground” is all low-end and rim shots, hinting at a lively car chase. “Grave Diction” sounds like a gruelling journey to the heart of the bass. It’s a robust track that blossoms when the synths wash around its core. “Spore Onion” isn’t that dissimilar, but the general tone is lighter, even though it’s augmented by spectral strings that could have accompanied Vincent Price on a killing spree.” (Paul Corey, Resident Advisor)

With this set for the Frijsfo Treats series Cardopusher showcases his DJ style with a mixture of his own productions, the kind of infectious-yet-experimental club material that music-lovers across Europe have come to expect from him, and selections he would more likely make listening at home when he is without the pressures to maintain a needy dancefloor. The result is a 21-track mix of old, new, unreleased and forthcoming tracks spanning  garage, techno, bass, electro, and the freshness between these genres that Cardopusher has been reinventing and turning heads with on his latest releases for Frijsfo Beats.
